Reduction of Customs Duties on Eyewear Products
The Assembly of People's Representatives (ARP) adopted on December 2, 2025, the additional article 86 of the 2026 finance bill, which aims to reduce customs duties on eyewear products. The vote resulted in 60 "yes", 11 abstentions, and 30 "no" votes.
Problem and Objective
The targeted issue is the high cost of optical equipment (glasses, frames, lenses) for Tunisian consumers, as well as the competitiveness of local businesses or importers operating in this sector. The specific need is to make these products more affordable for citizens and alleviate the customs burden in order to stimulate the eyewear market and improve access to eye care.
Solution and Expected Impact
Article 86 addresses this need by providing for a reduction in customs duties on eyewear products. This measure can potentially reduce the purchase price for consumers and encourage imports. Additionally, for businesses involved in importing or distributing eyewear, this measure can represent an incentive to develop their offerings further, reduce cost margins, and possibly stimulate local production or assembly.
Expected Outcomes
The adoption of article 86 is expected to have a positive impact on the Tunisian eyewear market, making optical equipment more accessible and affordable for consumers, while also promoting the growth and competitiveness of local businesses in the sector.
