900,000 Loaves of Bread Wasted Daily in Tunisia, Equivalent to $100 Million Annual Loss
In Tunisia, a staggering 900,000 loaves of bread are wasted every day, resulting in an annual loss of nearly 100 million dinars (approximately $28.7 million).
To combat this issue, a national strategy to fight food waste is expected to be implemented by September 2025. The National Consumer Institute (INC) announced on Friday, February 28, that the development of this strategy will involve collaboration between several ministries, including those of Commerce, Agriculture, and Industry.
Although it is still premature to assess the impact of this strategy, Tunisia appears to be taking a significant step forward in addressing food waste in the region. According to Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) data, food losses and waste in the Middle East and North Africa region are estimated to be over 200 kg per person per year, resulting in an annual loss of over $50 billion.
For the Ministry of Commerce and Export Development, combating food waste is crucial due to its economic and food security implications.
INC data shows that in 2021, food waste by Tunisian households represented 5% of their food expenditures, amounting to approximately 910 million dinars (around $287.4 million).
