African Startups Raise $343 Million in April 2025, Marking a Strong Comeback
African startups have raised $343 million in April 2025, indicating a strong comeback after a modest $50 million in March. According to Africa: The Big Deal's data, last month's funding also marks the second-best April on record, only surpassed by April 2022. Compared to the same period in 2024, the increase is 4.5x.
The month saw three significant transactions:
- hearX, a South African technology company, raised $100 million through a merger with American hearing aid company Eargo.
- Bokra, an Egyptian Islamic fintech, mobilized $59 million through a sukuk issuance, a rare move just one year after its $4.6 million seed round.
- Stitch, a South African payment infrastructure company, secured $55 million from existing investors as it expands its end-to-end payment solutions across the continent.
Since the beginning of the year, total funding for African startups has reached $803 million (+43% year-over.year), through 163 transactions (147 in 2024). No less than 225 investors have participated in deals worth $100,000 or more.
If this pace continues, 2025 could be a good year. According to a recent report by Startup Graveyard, lack of funding was the primary cause of closure for African startups in 2024, as in 2023. Over these two years, 29 entities had to shut down due to lack of means.
