Tunisian Filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania Wins Best Director Award at Malmö Arab Film Festival
Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania has been honored with the Best Director award for her fifth feature film, "Les Filles d'Olfa", at the 14th edition of the prestigious Malmö Arab Film Festival in Sweden, which took place from April 22 to 28, 2024, according to the TAP agency.
After making its world premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, this documentary has continued its ascent, becoming Tunisia's candidate for the 2024 Oscars. Ben Hania has successfully put Tunisia in the spotlight of the global cinematic scene. In fact, her previous film, "The Man Who Sold His Skin", was selected for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film in 2021, marking the first time Tunisia was featured on the list of Oscar finalists.
The festival was also an opportunity for Tunisian actor Dhafer El Abidine to shine, thanks to his performance in the Egyptian film "Un nez et trois yeux" by Amir Ramses, which won the Audience Award.
But that's not all. Another Tunisian project, "Wear and Tear" by director Sarra Abidi, also made a splash, winning three awards at the MAFF Industry Days Post-Production Platform.
Furthermore, the jury of the 12 feature films, chaired by Egyptian director Khairy Beshara, included Tunisian actress Souhir Ben Amara.
