Tunisia Embarks on Ambitious Energy Transformation in Public Buildings

In the face of the climate emergency, Tunisia has launched an ambitious energy transformation in its public buildings. The government is currently deploying an integrated program aimed at equipping the entire real estate portfolio of ministries and public institutions with photovoltaic solutions. This initiative is part of a broader vision of energy modernization, which also includes optimizing existing systems, such as lighting, heating, and air conditioning. These combined actions position the state as a leader in the transition to clean and renewable energy.

Program Overview

The program has two complementary axes:

  • The first axis involves the installation of photovoltaic panels, which will significantly reduce energy dependence on the STEG (Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas), while generating substantial savings on the state's electricity bills.
  • The second axis, equally crucial, focuses on improving energy efficiency through a comprehensive audit of the public real estate portfolio. This integrated approach ensures optimization of both energy production and consumption.

International Support

The implementation of this strategic ambition benefits from significant international financial support, with a total envelope of 65 million Tunisian dinars (Mtnd) for the year 2026. The German Development Bank (KfW) is supporting this transformative project through two loans covering the two components of the program:

  • 57 Mtnd for the photovoltaic aspect
  • 8 Mtnd for energy efficiency works This partnership demonstrates the confidence of international institutions in the national energy strategy and highlights the credibility of the country's commitments to sustainable development.
