Afreximbank’s Record $1.5 Billion Dollar Bond Issuance Signals Strong Investor Appetite for African Trade Finance
Investors were eager to participate. In its first public dollar-denominated bond offering since 2021, the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) attracted orders totaling $3.8 billion—more than double its initial fundraising target. Ultimately, the pan-African development finance institution successfully raised $1.5 billion.
Executed on July 16, 2026, the transaction marks Afreximbank’s largest bond issuance to date. Structured across two tranches of $750 million each, the deal features a 5.5-year senior note maturing in January 2032 with a yield of 6.3%, and a 10-year note maturing in July 2036 priced at 7.13%.
The overwhelming demand enabled the bank to significantly tighten its pricing. Borrowing costs were reduced by 37.5 basis points across both tranches compared to initial investor indications. Beyond the headline figure, it’s the market’s robust appetite that truly stands out. Orders poured in from the United Kingdom, continental Europe, Asia, and the United States, underscoring growing investor confidence in Afreximbank’s ability to access major international capital markets.
This milestone aligns with the bank’s broader capital diversification strategy. After stepping away from the public dollar bond market in 2021, Afreximbank strategically expanded its footprint by issuing bonds in Japan (2024 and 2025) and China (2025). This latest offering strategically repositions the U.S. dollar at the core of its funding framework.
The $1.5 billion raised will directly strengthen Afreximbank’s capacity to finance intra-African and international trade, while also supporting industrialization projects and sustainable economic growth across the continent.
“The success of this issuance demonstrates the continued confidence investors place in Afreximbank and Africa’s growth momentum,” said Chandi Mwenebungu, Director General of Treasury & Markets and Group Treasurer at Afreximbank.
More broadly, the transaction highlights the expanding role of African financial institutions on the global stage. For a continent urgently scaling infrastructure, deepening trade linkages, and accelerating industrialization, reliable access to international capital remains a strategic imperative.
Afreximbank is positioned to serve as the critical bridge between global capital flows and Africa’s development needs. With this record-breaking issuance, the international market has thrown the door wide open.
