Algeria Telecom Launches Ambitious 4G Network Reinforcement Plan
Algérie Télécom has announced the launch of an ambitious plan to reinforce its 4G network, with the deployment of 345 base stations in 44 wilayas, as announced on February 15, 2026. This initiative aims to extend coverage in isolated and high-density areas.
A Thriving Telecoms Market
As of June 2025, Algeria had 54.87 million GSM subscriptions, with 48.7 million of them being 4G subscriptions (88.8% of the total), according to the Authority for Regulation of Post and Electronic Communications (ARPCE). Algérie Télécom, through its subsidiary Mobilis, competes with Djezzy and Ooredoo in a market with four internet access providers. This plan aligns with the government's priorities for digital transformation.
Deployment Details
The first phase, currently underway until March 2026, will install 195 base stations equipped with cutting-edge technology for higher speeds and stable navigation. The second phase will add 150 additional stations. According to Algérie Télécom's official statement, this reinforcement targets high-density and isolated areas, consolidating the operator's position in the face of competition.
Government Requirements
Minister Zerrouki has demanded a "catch-up program" to fill the gaps, with a minimum service on southern road axes by June 2026, including emergency calls. Clear deadlines have been set for total coverage by the end of 2026, with periodic monitoring. The government also aims to connect 1,400 rural areas (500-2,000 inhabitants) in phase 1, and an additional 4,500 by 2027, by leveraging the Alcomsat-1 satellite and expanding fiber optic coverage.
