META to Lay Off 3000 Employees, Mostly Africans and Europeans
META is preparing to terminate the contracts of 3000 of its employees. The majority of those affected are Africans, followed by Europeans and then Asians. The selective criterion adopted by META this time is performance. The group claims to be letting go of the underperformers, which represent 5% of its employees. However, no regional office will be closed.
It's worth noting that, unlike Africans, Asians, and some Europeans, whose contract termination is relatively straightforward, German, French, Italian, and Dutch employees benefit from labor laws that protect them.
Previous Layoffs and New Hires
It's useful to mention that META had already laid off employees in Africa in 2024, mainly its team of engineers, which led some to think that the group wants to shut down its African branch. At the same time, META announced the recruitment of specialized machine learning and AI engineers, which is part of its new 2025 vision that prioritizes artificial intelligence in its development roadmap.
