Economic Exchanges between Chad and Algeria on the Rise
Economic exchanges between Chad and Algeria remain modest, but they are clearly gaining momentum. Long focused on hydrocarbons, particularly through shared expertise and technical training, cooperation between the two countries is now expanding to other sectors.
Diversification of Cooperation
The two partners are seeking to broaden the scope of their relations. Agriculture appears as a key lever, with prospects around the export of livestock and agricultural products. Industry is following the same trend, particularly in construction materials and local processing. Services also offer new opportunities. In parallel, discussions are underway to improve logistical infrastructure and facilitate exchanges between Central Africa and the Maghreb.
Concrete Mechanisms
This resurgence is based on concrete mechanisms. The first session of the Chadian-Algerian Business Council, held on April 20, 2026, in Algiers, is part of this logic: creating a structured framework to encourage investment and give more substance to exchanges.
State Visit and Agreements
In this context, Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno visited Algiers for a state visit, at the invitation of his Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune. This meeting resulted in the finalization of 27 agreements covering several areas, from energy to infrastructure, including health, training, and economic cooperation.
Key Priorities
Ultimately, three major priorities emerge:
- Development of the energy and mining sectors, with an emphasis on skill transfer.
- Strengthening infrastructure and connectivity, whether in transportation or digital technology.
- Cooperation in human capital sectors, such as education and health.
Regional Alignment
Beyond economics, the two countries also share similar positions on regional issues, particularly security in the Sahel. They agree that it is essential to prioritize African solutions to the continent's crises.
