Electric Vehicles Gain Interest in Tunisia, but High Cost Remains a Major Obstacle

According to a recent study conducted by Emrhod Consulting, 20% of Tunisians planning to purchase a car in the short term express a preference for electric vehicles. However, a significant number, 71%, believe they do not have the financial means to acquire such a vehicle. This disparity suggests that while interest in eco-friendly cars is growing, the high cost of electric vehicles remains a major obstacle for a large part of the Tunisian population.

Regarding car purchase intentions in 2025, 29% of respondents declare they plan to buy a new or used car. Among these potential buyers, 47% prefer thermal vehicles, while 17% lean towards hybrid models. Only 14% of those surveyed opt for electric vehicles, indicating that despite growing interest, their adoption remains relatively low due to financial concerns and limited recharging infrastructure in Tunisia.

The study also reveals that price remains the primary criterion in choosing a car, closely followed by fuel consumption. Aesthetic appeal also plays an important role in the purchasing decision, as well as the availability of spare parts and maintenance costs. These factors suggest that Tunisian consumers prioritize practical and economic criteria, which explains why thermal vehicles continue to dominate the market, despite interest in eco-friendly alternatives like hybrids and electric vehicles.
