Global PC Market Sees 13% Decline in 2023

The global PC market continued its downward trend in 2023, with a 13% year-over-year decline. Only 259.5 million units were sold last year, compared to 301.4 million in 2022. To put this into perspective, 2021 saw a record 348.8 million units sold.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a major contributor to this trend, as lockdowns and travel restrictions led to a surge in remote work, resulting in a high demand for laptops. This, in turn, caused prices to skyrocket due to supply chain issues and raw material shortages.

In Tunisia, the PC market saw a 33% decline in sales volume, with only 181,977 units sold, compared to 269,834 in 2022. In addition to global factors, the decline in purchasing power and investment gloom also contributed to this trend.

However, globally, the PC market seems to be recovering. According to a report by Canalys, the first quarter of 2024 saw a 3% increase in sales compared to the same period in 2023. In total, manufacturers sold over 57 million devices, driven by a 4% year-over-year growth in laptop sales.

However, this trend does not seem to be reflected in Tunisia, where the market remains under pressure. SMART Tunisie, a leading IT company, saw a decline in its computing segment. The economic situation is forcing companies to use their IT equipment beyond its accounting depreciation period, and the replacement rate continues to decline. While there may be a rebound later in the year, positive signs are currently lacking.
