KfW, German Development Bank, Signs €14.5 Million Financing Agreement with APAL to Support Climate Change Adaptation in Tunisia

The KfW, German Development Bank, signed a financing agreement worth €14.5 million with the Tunisian Agency for Coastal Protection and Development (APAL) on behalf of the German Federal Government. This financing is intended for the "Integrated Climate Change Adaptation in the Tunisian Coastal Region - Strengthening Resilience" program, which is part of the Integrated Water Resources Management Program (climate change).

"Protecting the coast means putting its ecosystem at the heart of an integrated and concerted approach essential for preserving the local economy, water, and agriculture," said Dr. Nejla Ghachem, Senior Environmental Sector Officer at the KfW office in Tunisia. "This project illustrates our shared commitment to building a more resilient and sustainable future for the Mediterranean basin, Mare Nostrum."

The project is part of the Tunisian-German cooperation program for integrated water resources management, aiming to contribute to climate change adaptation. This new financing will expand the scope of phases 4 and 5 of the Tunisian Coastal Protection Program (PPLT) currently underway. Its objective is to protect the Tunisian coast against erosion, particularly in the areas of Bizerte and the coastal stretch from Sousse South to Monastir, while financing key studies necessary for the implementation of ongoing phases.

The project aims to increase the resilience of the Tunisian coastal region to the negative effects of climate change, particularly against coastal erosion caused by sea-level rise and storm surges, through rehabilitation and protection measures. It will contribute to the ecological and economic valorization of these coastal areas, as well as improve the living conditions of the beneficiary population.

As part of the financial cooperation of the Federal Republic of Germany, the KfW supports development programs in the MENA region, across Africa, in Asia, Latin America, and Southeast Europe. It supports partner countries in improving the living conditions of their populations while preserving the climate, rare resources, and the environment.
