Bank Card Transactions in Tunisia Reach 121.2 Million Operations
In Tunisia, bank card transactions reached 121.2 million operations as of September 30, 2024, representing a total volume of 20,917.7 million dinars (Mtnd).
These figures mark an 8.1% increase in the number of transactions and a 9.9% increase in value compared to the same period in 2023, according to the "Payments in Figures in Tunisia" bulletin published on Tuesday by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT).
The majority of these operations, 62%, were used for cash withdrawals, while 38% concerned payments. However, despite this increase in activity, the number of bank cards in circulation decreased by 9.8%, reaching 6.361 million as of September 2024, compared to December 2023.
In parallel, infrastructure has been reinforced with a 2.5% increase in the number of automated teller machines (ATMs) and bank branches, bringing the total to 3,287 units.
Mobile payment is also experiencing remarkable growth, with a tenfold increase in recorded transactions. The number of operations rose from 159,000 as of September 2023, with a value of 37.8 Mtnd, to 1.6 million transactions in September 2024, generating a total value of 232.7 Mtnd.
These developments reflect a growing adoption of digital payment technologies in Tunisia, despite a contraction in the number of bank cards in circulation. They also highlight the increasing role of mobile payments in transforming citizens' financial habits.
