African Tech Startups Raise Over $415 Million in June
African tech startups have raised over $415 million in June, bringing the total funding reported for the first six months of 2026 to $1.208 billion, according to data from Launch Base Africa. This marks the third consecutive year that the continent's startup ecosystem has surpassed the $1 billion mark in the first half of the year.
A Mixed Picture
On the one hand, this achievement is a positive sign for the African tech industry. However, a closer look at the data reveals a more nuanced picture. The total funding raised in the first half of 2026 represents a decline of approximately 17% compared to the same period last year. Additionally, investors are now focusing on companies with high capital intensity and infrastructure-related projects, while debt and hybrid financing instruments are gaining ground over equity funding.
Climate-Focused Startups Lead the Way
Startups operating in the climate sector have attracted significant investment, with over $385 million raised in June alone, accounting for 93% of the total funding reported for the month. This trend reflects the high capital requirements of clean energy models and their alignment with the priorities of international donors and development finance institutions. Key areas of investment include electric mobility, off-grid solar, carbon capture, and cold chain infrastructure.
Outlook for the Rest of the Year
It remains to be seen whether the $1.208 billion raised in the first half of 2026 will be interpreted as a sign of a sustained recovery by the end of the year. A significant portion of the answer will depend on the dynamics of the second half of the year. Several large funding rounds are still in the pipeline and could be completed by December. Furthermore, the debt market, driven by innovative instruments and better integration of local financial institutions, may experience faster growth than the equity market.
