Savings Performance: A Notable Achievement
In terms of volume, savings have never stopped progressing, but their relative weakness is highlighted when compared to GDP. The reference institution in this matter is La Poste. As of late August 2025, postal savings reached 11,218,791 million Tunisian dinars (Mtnd). On the same date last year, it was 9,971,136 Mtnd, representing a net collection of 1,247,655 Mtnd. This is a notable performance that deserves to be emphasized.
Comparison with Banks
To understand the magnitude of this performance, it is essential to consider that banks reported savings of 35,855,765 Mtnd on the same date, compared to 32,823,677 Mtnd the previous year, representing a net increase of 3,032,088 Mtnd over a rolling year. Given the difference in terms of network density, La Poste's achievement is appreciable.
Implications for the Proposed Postal Bank
These figures will likely revive debates about the proposed postal bank. We reiterate our opinion that the time is not opportune, and the profitability of this financial institution could be affected by this transformation. Significant investments are required, including information systems. Moreover, the level of non-performing loans in the banking system increased to 14.5% in 2024, and current signs indicate that the situation may not improve this year.
Alternative Approach
Instead, La Poste should focus on consolidating its digitalization approach and building on the success of the essential D17 application. Its current status allows La Poste to contribute more to improving Tunisians' access to financial services, as it is simply different from banks.
