Acceleration of Road Cleaning Operations in Grand Tunis
The Ministry of Equipment and Housing plans to accelerate cleaning operations on the numbered road network in Grand Tunis to eliminate black spots and prepare infrastructure for the upcoming rainy season. For 2026, an envelope of 10 million dinars has been allocated to these works, in addition to 8.2 million dinars for interventions carried out by small enterprises.
Objective and Scope
This orientation was reaffirmed on Tuesday, June 9, during a follow-up meeting chaired by the Minister of Equipment and Housing, also in charge of managing the Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy, Salah Zouari. The meeting brought together regional officials from Tunis, Ariana, Manouba, and Ben Arous, as well as several ministry officials. The program concerns approximately 1,400 kilometers of roads in Grand Tunis and includes the elimination of construction waste, earth piles, and debris accumulated along the roads.
Interventions and Activities
The interventions include:
- Cleaning of construction waste, earth piles, and debris
- Clearance of stormwater drainage systems
- Maintenance of green spaces
- Improvement of public lighting
- Renewal of road signage
Challenges and Coordination
During the meeting, the minister emphasized the need to intensify interventions in the field to quickly address the most degraded areas. He highlighted that construction waste and the obstruction of drainage canals pose risks to road users and can contribute to flooding or fires. Participants also examined the difficulties encountered in executing the program and called for better coordination between different ministries, public establishments, and stakeholders to improve the effectiveness of operations.
Citizen Involvement and Success
The ministry estimates that the success of this program also depends on citizen involvement in preserving road cleanliness and public domain. The stated objective is to strengthen the pace of work over the next few weeks to ensure better preparation of the road network before autumn weather conditions.
